Hi Everyone, today I had the pleasure of speaking with an inspiring young woman named Yulma Lopez. There are very few conversations that have left me feeling so emotional. After speaking with her today, I needed a moment to cry a little and took some time to be grateful for everything I have in my life.
Yulma is a DACA student who faces deportation if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the proposed rescinding of the policy. In 2017, our current administration rescinded the policy, putting all of these bright young adults at risk of deportation.
I am grateful Yulma took the time to talk to me today about her upcoming graduation from college, which has been altered due to the coronavirus pandemic. After all the years of hard work, she will not be able to attend her graduation ceremony, but she will still graduate with her Bachelors in New Media Arts and a minor in Psychology.
I am inspired by DACA students and hope you listen with an open mind to her journey. I learned so much form our conversation and hope you will too.
Information from Wikipedia on DACA:
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an American immigration policy that allows some individuals with unlawful presence in the United States after being brought to the country as children to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for a work permit in the U.S. To be eligible for the program, recipients cannot have felonies or serious misdemeanors on their records. Unlike the proposed DREAM Act, DACA does not provide a path to citizenship for recipients, known as Dreamers.
As a reminder my views on politics are my own and do not affect my position at work.
