Michi Trota is a Filipina American writer, editor, speaker, and fire performer who is a five-time Hugo Award winner, British Fantasy Award winner, Ignite Award finalist, and member of the FYLPRO 2022 Immersion Program cohort.

The Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) is a network of high-performing, next-generation leaders who advance the Philippines and the Filipino people through their advocacy and expertise in various industries. Michi shares how impactful her work with this organization has been and shares stories from her visit to the Philippines.

We also discuss equity in creative spaces, sexism, AAPI representation, and her passion for fire performing!

About Michi Trota

Michi Trota is a writer, editor, speaker, and fire performer who is a five-time Hugo Award winner, British Fantasy Award winner, Ignyte Award finalist, and the first Filipina to win a Hugo Award. Michi is a former Editor-in-Chief of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA)–the first person of color to serve in that role–and co-editor of the WisCon Chronicles Vol. 12 with Isabel Schechter (Aqueduct Press). Michi has written for Chicago Magazine, New Frontiers: The Many Worlds of George Takei, and Prism, and was the exhibit text writer for Worlds Beyond Here: Expanding the Universe of APA Science Fiction at the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, WA. She’s been featured in publications like the 2016 Chicago Reader People Issue, Chicago Tribune, and The Guardian, and has spoken at the Adler Planetarium, the Chicago Humanities Festival, the Museum of Science and Industry, and on multiple NPR affiliate stations.

Michi has practiced fire performance and flow arts for over a decade, served as a core organizer and foundation board member of the Chicago Full Moon Jam, and currently performs with the Raks Geek/Raks Inferno Fire+Bellydance troupe. She is a past president and past board member of the Chicago Nerd Social Club Board of Organizers, the first Managing Editor/Nonfiction Editor of the multiple Hugo Award-winning and World Fantasy Award finalist Uncanny: A Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy (2014-2019), and lives with her spouse and their two cats in Chicago.
